Junior Road Bike Club
Attention parents with children age 10+. I'm thinking of organizing a junior road bike club/race team for 2011. At this point I'm trying to get a feel for the appetite for a junior bike club. If you have a son or daughter who is interested in joining an organized club for cycling and possibly racing, let me know. W...ith enough interest, I'll work to organize a meeting/info session. Thanks - Greg

Why you should support your LBS
Back in March, I bought a Cannondale MTB from Belfast Bicycles
A couple of weekends ago, this happened:
I called up Mike and asked him if he thought it might be covered under warranty. He said bring in the bike and he'd check.
About an hour after I dropped it off, he emailed me saying SRAM would be sending a warranty replacement derailleur. Wow!
About 2 hours ago, I picked up my bike from Mike. He'd contacted SRAM, worked out the warranty, installed the derailleur and a new hanger, replaced the cable and a few bent chain links. I asked him what I owed for the repair. He said nothing. Wow!
Sure, I buy some bike stuff online, but it is hard to dispute the value of shopping locally, especially with that level of service.
Thanks Mike!

Cadillac Challenge 2010
Dana pointed out to us tonight that the Cadillac Challenge is being held (on October 3 this year). Full info is on the website, and Tony is listed as the contact person again (his family took a year off last year). There was a conflict with the Dempsey ride last year, but one diehard who rode Cadillac said he'll tell his friends to donate to Dempsey, but ride Cadillac. I know I'll being planning to do this one again.
Long ride Sunday
Some of us will be doing a ride to Unity and back via Freedom and Palermo/Level Hill/Rt.3 this Sunday. This is the route I posted last week, about 71 miles. We're going to leave at 7 AM, and there are, as always, shorter routes back. Looks like the century isn't happening Saturday- if anyone has any thoughts re:rescheduling this, lets toss some ideas around. We should at the very least have some form of club get together, whether we do a ride or not. Discuss... Ken

ALTERNATE SUNDAY RIDE THIS WEEK 8/1
To mix things up a bit, and ride some different roads, some of us will be meeting at the parking lot on Verona Island and doing a 55 (or so) mile ride around the Blue Hill area. We plan on driving over to the lot, which is right off the right turn at the top of the hill once you've crossed Penobscot Narrows Bridge (right behind the little park there). Ride time is still 8 AM from that lot. If you're ambitious and want more miles, you can ride to the ride, but we want to head out at 8. It is a hilly, but very scenic route -camera worthy, if the weather is as good as predicted. We can stop at the Co-op in Blue Hill, or another small store in Surry or Orland as needed. If anyone's up for this, it's a nice route. I'm not sure if others are riding at 8 from the Co-op, it would be great if you left a comment if you are in case anyone else is checking in here on the site (and not on the email group, ie visitors, etc.) Hope to have a good group, should be fun. Ken

Thursday Night Ride - Updates!!
Starting this Thursday, May 27 through the end of June, Dan will be leading a B group ride from Belfast Bicycles @ 5:30 PM. Average speed for this group will be at or below 15 MPH. So if you are looking for a more casual group ride, or have always wondered what it would be like to ride with a group, this is a great place to start.
There will also be an A group from Belfast Bicycles at the same time - ride leader TBD.
Hope to see you out on the road.

Great ride today - Sunday, May 2nd.
We started out with 10 riders, then 3 peeled off to tackle Aborn Hill and fly home to Belfast. The remaining 7 went on together to the 25 mile point where 2 others split off for home. The remaining 5 of us continued on over the bumpy roller coaster of Rt. 220 and then on to Liberty. The sun came out to reward us and the last 20 home were most excellent.
Click the link below to see the full route. Note, everyone but me started from Belfast, I rode in from home. About the same distance overall.

Battenkill
Steve Conner, Seth Haskell, Dan Winston and myself rode the Tour of the Battenkill on Saturday. 62 miles of pavement/dirt through beautiful farmland. It's a great race, I highly recommend it. Smiling Steve took an excellent fourth place in the cat 4 race.
For his efforts he was rewarded with this handsome portrait of Ulysses S. Grant:
Dan had a top 20 finish and then managed to run 2 miles from the car to the finish line to catch the end of Seth's race. When he got there he was fresh as a daisy:
Afterward we enjoyed a healthy post-race meal of burgers and fries and reveled in our accomplishments. It was a good time all around, until Seth got tired of Steve's bragging and unleashed the Fists of Fury:
Steve is fine, and should recover in time for Turtle Pond. Next year maybe we can get a few more of these jerseys at the race.

Honorary Paris-Roubaix ride - Searsmont, April 11th
Leaving from the Post Office parking lot in Searsmont at 9 AM. See the ride map here - Honorary Paris-Roubaix route
It sounds like there may be two differently paced groups for the ride this year - one with time constraints and more miles, the other more casual, looking to get in some early season group miles on a fun route.
In either case, hope you can make it.

Group Ride - Sunday 3/28 - 9AM @ the COOP
We definitely got the best part of the day. Good 20+ miles with the group, 33 miles total with my ride into Belfast. Thanks, Dan, John and Murray for the company - and thanks Dan for the lift home.
Check the Ride Stats page for the route details.
Single speed maiden voyage
Finally got my Frankenbike switched over to yet another iteration- this time its "single speed tourer". Planet Bike fenders, new rack trunk, have my panniers from before (not on yet), and stripped down drivetrain with conversion kit. Started out at 42/16, turned around after a mile, went home and put on an 18 cog on the rear. Much more realistic, I think. Went out the Rt 3 to Fenwick Rd. to Back Belmont loop, still snowy spots in the shade. Sunny, though! Like always, any day with time on the bike is a good one.

Too nice a day to wait til 6...for most everyone
I can't blame anyone for riding earlier today rather than waiting until 6...it looked like such a nice day from my desk.
Either way, it was the nicest commute home I've had this year - light enough for me to take the long way home.
Met up with Dan and Ken at Belfast Bicycles before going our separate ways - maybe next time.
So if you got out on your bike today, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. And if you didn't, well there's always next time.
